Hyrum's Blessing
Friday, November 27, 2009
Splish Splash
Today we gave Hyrum his first "real" bath. Up until now we've had to give him sponge baths because his umbilical cord was still attached, but last night it fell off. I know it's weird for a kid that's 5 weeks old to still have his cord attached, but the doctors say it's because they had to use it for so long after he was born (he was fed through it for about the first week and a half of his life). He seemed to really like his bath! He had a completely content look on his face the entire time--it was way cute!

The Miracle Baby
We think he's a total stud. The nurses today said he is their "miracle baby." They said pulmonary hemorrages are often fatal in adults and that it truly is a miralce Hyrum is doing as well as he is. We don't doubt that it is a miracle. So many of you have fasted and prayed for our little guy. We can't thank you enough. And we can't thank our Heavenly Father enough for hearing our prayers and being so kind and merciful. We love our little miracle!

Doing a Little Better!
My Favorite Visit So Far
One interesting fact Dan and I learned last night is that because of the way the tubes are positioned in Hyrum's throat, he doesn't make any noise when he cries. The tubes block the vocal chords from vibrating correctly. So, last night during his bath, he was screaming, but no noise was coming out. It was actually pretty funny.
Well, we're off to the hospital again this morning so we should have more info later this afternoon!

Hyrum Update - Wednesday PM
The nurse told us that today was the first day they were going to try feeding Hyrum some breastmilk. Up until now he's been fed a solution that has all the right proteins, vitamins, fats, etc. that he needs. However, they want to get him started on the milk so that he can get his bowels working and they can make sure there's no problems there. The plan is to start with a feeding of about 1/3 teaspoon every 3 hours and see if he can handle it. We'll find out how that went a little later on tonight when we go visit him again.
The PICC they put in seems to be doing well. It's sad to see it in his head, but I take comfort in knowing it doesn't hurt him. They're still waiting on 2 lab tests to see if they can find exactly what kind of infection he is fighting--the rest of the tests have come back negative.
Other than that, things are about the same. We might know more after tonight's visit. Dan and I continue to be impressed by the NICU staff. The nurses and doctors take time to really answer our questions and make sure we understand what they're doing for Hyrum and why. I'm even starting to understand some of the machines Hyrum is hooked up to! It is so comforting to know he is in such good hands.
We love our Hyrum and continue to feel such strength and support from all of you. Thank you for your prayers and love.

Hyrum Update - Tuesday PM
It was fun this afternoon to spend some time with Hyrum. He held Laurie's finger, then mine as he napped. It was cute to see him interact minimally with us. It was also cute to see his brow furrow, or him to make sucking motions. As you understand, Hyrum has been sedated most of his life, so this is exciting for us.
Hyrum's Bilirubin count has decreased a little and his color is better.
The other newest thing is that Hyrum is current under Droplet Precautions. That means that anyone interacts closely with him has to wear a gown with full sleeves, a mask, and gloves. The purpose is to protect us from any virus that Hyrum may have, because it's undcertain how dangerous it could be. Pregnant staff are not allowed near Hyrum, as another precaution, to keep their kids safe. Then, we are asked to put on hand sanitizer as we leave as well.
Every time we're near Hyrum, we feel of the love of each of you, and your kindness in keeping him and us in our prayers. We feel that we've been watched over, and we find strength from all of you.

Our Little Guy!
He's heeere! That's right, our little guy was born today, October 22, at 12:33 pm. Laurie started laboring at 11 last night, and labored through the night... we came into the hospital at 2:30. The epidural was wonderful (even for me, the husband!), and it helped Laurie labor while being able to get a little rest. When Laurie started pushing, she only had to push for 13 minutes before our little guy was here! They let us hold him briefly, then took him to the NICU. He had/has some bleeding in his lungs, a slight fever, and muconium throughout him. Now, he's hooked up to a respirator, and his breathing is a LOT smoother. I was relieved to see how much better he was doing by this evening. We're excited to be parents! Laurie is doing well, and hopped up on drugs! We're both exhausted physically and emotionally, so hopefully tonight will bring well-needed rest. Thank you for your prayers!

One Year Ago Today
In the short twelve months since then we've planned a wedding, got married in the Bountiful temple, graduated from BYU, and are now expecting our first baby. I love being married to my best friend. I'm excited about our future and look forward to all the years that lie ahead of us. Thanks for a great year Dan! I love you!

The month in review...
Yellowstone was a lot of fun! We really enjoyed the nature and seeing all the wildlife.
We got to be a "ma and pa" at our stake's youth conference. We did a service project for this lady one of the days of the conference. It was a really fun opportunity to work with some awesome youth.
We got to go to the Real Salt Lake soccer game this past weekend. I work with a guy who has a friend on the team, so we got some sweet tickets. It was my first MLS game and, being such a huge soccer fan, I totally loved it! RSL played the Houston Dynamo and the final score was 0-0. It was such an intense game, with so many missed scoring opportunities! Tons of fun.
So, that's a quick run down of the past month or so of our lives. Things are going really well for us and we're getting more excited all the time to welcome our baby to our family in October!

Knapp Family Camping Trip
Monday morning we got up and went to a little place near Swan Valley called Pine Basin. It was the first time all my family had been together since our wedding in November. It was so fun to have everyone there and to spend time playing, relaxing, chatting, and of course (like always with my family) eating way too much.
At the Idaho Falls temple
My mom, sisters and I letting some true colors show
Dan playing "ladder ball" or "monkey golf" or whatever you want to call it
Bryce and the other grandkids caught several squirrels in the squirrel trap made by Uncle Jared.
Runnin' around having a good time
We had a fun time and enjoyed the time together with my family. I love my family and am so grateful for the wonderful people they are!

What happens in Vegas....
We loved the Tournament of Kings show at the Excalibur.
It took a while, but we finally found a drinking fountain on the Strip.
The best part of the trip was getting to see the Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian. The show was amazing! Our seats were towards the back right of the theatre, but because the show wasn't sold out that night, they let us move up. We ended up in the center of the theatre right under the big chandelier. It was awesome!
The trip was so much fun! We loved staying at the Excalibur. We also saw the Body World exhibition at the Luxor, several founatin shows at the Belagio, the volcano erupting at the Mirage, walked around M&M World, and enjoyed being outside and strolling around in the awesome 90 degree weather. It was so fun to get to spend time together with no homework or tests waiting for us back home.
The weekend before we left we went to Idaho Falls for my sister's baby blessing. Since Dan and I got married, my nephews have been begging him to wrestle with them. They have wanted to take him on since "he's so tall." Well, Dan finally gave in. Here's what happened:
I'm glad he survived! I've wrestled them before and they're tougher than they look!
